Beisi Pagoda Suzhou | A Complete Guide to Suzhou’s Ancient Pagoda

Rising gracefully above Suzhou's skyline, Beisi Pagoda (North Temple Pagoda) stands as one of the city's oldest and most enduring landmarks. With a history spanning over 1700 years, this nine-story octagonal brick pagoda is not only an architectural treasure but also a spiritual beacon that embodies Suzhou's deep Buddhist heritage. Its towering presence has witnessed the ebb and flow of dynasties, serving as a silent guardian over the city and a symbol of cultural continuity.

Unlike the classical gardens that define Suzhou's aesthetic charm, Beisi Pagoda offers a different perspective - both literally and culturally. From its top, visitors can enjoy sweeping views of Suzhou's old town, its winding canals, and the lush greenery that fringes the city. At its base lies the tranquil Beisi Temple, where the scent of incense mingles with the soft rustle of leaves, creating a serene atmosphere ideal for meditation or quiet reflection. For travelers seeking history, spirituality, photography opportunities, or simply a moment of peace, Beisi Pagoda provides an unforgettable experience.

History & Cultural Background
Beisi Pagoda  traces its origins back to the Three Kingdoms period (3rd century AD) and has been reconstructed several times throughout history, most notably during the Tang, Song, Ming, and Qing dynasties. Its full name," Bao'en Temple Pagoda," means "Pagoda of Gratitude," reflecting the Buddhist virtue of compassion and remembrance. Over centuries, it has accumulated layers of historical narratives, from imperial patronage to local folklore, making it a living museum of Suzhou's spiritual and cultural life.

In ancient times, the pagoda served not only as a sacred religious site but also as a navigation landmark for boats entering Suzhou via the Grand Canal. Its towering structure could be seen from miles away, guiding merchants, travelers, and pilgrims alike. Throughout dynastic eras, emperors, monks, poets, and scholars visited the temple, leaving inscriptions, poems, and legends that still echo today. It is said that sacred relics once housed within the pagoda brought blessings to those who climbed its steps, adding to its aura of reverence and mystery.

Architectural Highlights
The nine-story, octagonal pagoda showcases a perfect fusion of ancient craftsmanship, Buddhist symbolism, and Jiangnan architectural elegance. Built primarily of brick, its layered eaves curve gracefully upward, while intricate wooden brackets and carved Buddha statues adorn each tier. The pagoda's interior spiral staircase allows visitors to ascend to the top floor, where panoramic views stretch over Suzhou's old town, its canals, gardens, and distant hills.

Beisi Pagoda's symmetry and proportion embody the Buddhist ideal of balance and harmony. Each tier narrows as it rises, symbolizing the path toward enlightenment and spiritual ascent. The carefully carved motifs - including lotus flowers, bodhisattvas, and sacred scriptures - reflect meticulous artistry and convey profound Buddhist teachings. When sunlight strikes the tower at dawn or dusk, the red bricks emit a warm golden glow, creating a mesmerizing scene that has inspired poets, painters, and photographers for generations.

Main Buildings
01 Maitreya Buddha
Upon entering the mountain gate, a large courtyard greets you, with the Maitreya Buddha smiling at visitors. The statue is carved from Jinshan stone. Turning around, you will find a standing statue of Weituo. In Suzhou's Baoyen Temple, both Maitreya Buddha and Weituo are enshrined outdoors in the courtyard, which is a rare feature in Chinese Buddhist temples. Behind the Buddha is the Baoyen Pagoda, surrounded by towering ancient trees, adding to the temple’s solemn and ancient atmosphere.

02 Beisi Pagoda
Legend has it that during the Three Kingdoms period, Sun Quan built the Tongxuan Temple for his wet nurse, Chen Shi. The 11-story high pagoda was first constructed during the Liang Dynasty under Emperor Wu. The existing pagoda was rebuilt in the 23rd year of the Southern Song Dynasty (1153) and stands at 76 meters tall with 9 stories. Known as the "North Pagoda," it is an iconic landmark of Suzhou. In 1986, to preserve the ancient city’s appearance, Suzhou restricted new buildings within the old city to 24 meters, which is the height of the third floor of the Baoyen Pagoda. Thus, the North Pagoda became the skyline of the old city.

03 Ancient Bronze Buddha Hall
The Ancient Bronze Buddha Hall, also known as the Seven Buddhas Hall, was built in the 10th year of the Kangxi era (1671) during the Qing Dynasty. The hall features a high ridge, with dragon-shaped ridge beasts at both ends. In the center, two dragons play with a pearl, with a group of carp beneath, symbolizing the famous "carp jumping over the Dragon Gate" legend. The back ridge features two phoenixes facing the sun, symbolizing virtuous talents encountering auspicious times. This is one of only three temples in China that enshrine the Seven Buddhas, representing Shakyamuni and the six preceding Buddhas.

04 Sutra Storage Hall
Located to the north of the Ancient Bronze Buddha Hall, the Sutra Storage Hall is a two-story pavilion with a gable roof. The first floor is 9 bays wide and 6 bays deep, while the second floor is 7 bays wide and 4 bays deep. The roof's front is inscribed with "Wind and Rain in Harmony," and the back with "National Peace and Prosperity." The hall stores ancient Qing Dynasty editions of the "Dazang Sutra."

05 Lianquan Pavilion
Named after the ancient well inside, the Lianquan Pavilion is a hexagonal structure. It faces east, with a corridor at the back and brick benches on either side. The pavilion is surrounded by fragrant osmanthus trees, adding a pleasant aroma to the space. The two ancient wells at the Baoyen Temple, one named "Lianquan" and the other "Qingquan," date back to the Ming Dynasty.

06 Zhang Shicheng Memorial Stele
Adjacent to the Lianquan Pavilion, a memorial stele dedicated to Zhang Shicheng is located at the end of a path surrounded by osmanthus trees. Zhang Shicheng led a peasant uprising in the Yuan Dynasty and declared himself King of Wu, eventually being defeated by Zhu Yuanzhang. The stele, carved with the scene of Zhang Shicheng welcoming the Yuan envoy, features exquisite deep relief sculptures with 118 figures. This historical relic is a fine example of Yuan Dynasty stone art.

07 Huacang World
Located in the central part of the temple, Huacang World is a small independent courtyard built in 1925. The courtyard is a perfect example of a "garden within a garden" design, with a square layout covering about 1000 square meters. It features elegant rooms, a moon-shaped pond with green waters, and a tranquil atmosphere, embodying the concept of hidden elegance.

08 Mei Pu (Plum Garden)
Historically, the northeastern corner of the temple contained a rear garden with features such as the Big Dipper, Datong Pagoda, and a water pool. In 1978, the garden was rebuilt as the Mei Pu, a natural landscape garden covering 5,250 square meters. It includes a stone mountain and a pool, with a yellow wall at the entrance signaling the presence of a temple garden.

09 Pure Dust Guanyin Hall
Also known as the Nanmu Guanyin Hall, this hall sits facing south with a double-eave gable roof. The current structure was rebuilt during the Ming Dynasty's Wanli period and is the best-preserved Ming architecture in Suzhou. Inside, a colorful ceiling with intricate paintings adorns the hall.

10 "The Prosperity of Gusu" Lacquer Carved Gallery
"The Prosperity of Gusu," also known as "The Birth of a Golden Age," is a large lacquer carving created by Xu Yang, a palace artist from Suzhou during the Qing Dynasty. The artwork, housed in the Shenyang Museum, vividly depicts the scenery of Suzhou in the mid-18th century, including the lakes, mountains, rivers, and everyday life of the city.

Photography Opportunities
Beisi Pagoda is one of the best photography spots in Suzhou, especially for those interested in architecture and cityscapes. The most iconic view is from the temple courtyard, where the pagoda stands elegantly behind prayer halls, framed by green trees and red lanterns. Early morning or sunset offers the best light for warm, golden tones.

For aerial perspective shots, climb to the seventh or eighth floor - from here, the tiled roofs, waterways, and skyline align beautifully for wide panoramic photos. Don't miss capturing the contrast between old and new Suzhou: ancient pagoda bricks in the foreground with modern high-rises in the background.

During festivals like Chinese New Year or Buddha's Birthday, the temple is decorated with lanterns and incense smoke, creating a dreamlike atmosphere perfect for travel photography. Tripods are not allowed inside the pagoda, so a steady hand or image-stabilized camera is helpful.
