Chinese Ceramics Culture
Chinese ceramics (also named Chinese pottery) show a continuous development since pre-dynastic times and are one of the most significant forms of Chinese art and ceramics globally. Chinese ceramics range from construction materials such as bricks and tiles, to hand-built pottery vessels fired in bonfires or kilns, to the sophisticated Chinese porcelain wares made for the imperial court and for export. Porcelain is so identified with China that it is still called "china" in everyday English usage. Increasingly over their long history, Chinese ceramics can be classified between those made for the imperial court, either to use or distribute, those made for a discriminating Chinese market, and those for popular Chinese markets or for export. Some types of wares were also made only or mainly for special uses such as burial in tombs, or for use on altars.
In the morning/afternoon, our tour guide will pick you up at your Suzhou downtown hotel or Suzhou train stationyou will find a welcome signage "Your Way Holiday". And your Suzhou tour start as below:
Today, our tour guide will accompany you to a local Pottery Handcraft Experience Studio, where you’ll take part in a fascinating, hands-on ceramic-making session. Whether you’re a complete beginner or simply curious about this ancient art, your skilled instructor will guide you through each step of the process. Don't worry if it's your first time—our tour guide will help translate and assist throughout the session to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience.
Making pottery may seem complex, but with expert guidance, you’ll discover the joy of shaping clay into your very own creation. The process typically includes three main steps:
Step 1: Selecting the Clay – Feel the Earth in Your Hands
Your first task is choosing the right clay. You’ll work with high-quality porcelain clay, favored for its soft white color, smooth texture, and excellent durability after firing. The instructor will explain the differences between primary clay and ball clay, as well as how to judge the flexibility, strength, and firing temperature of each. You’ll get a chance to handle the clay and understand how its natural qualities influence the final piece. This grounding step allows you to connect with the material on a tactile level—just as artisans have done for generations.
Step 2: Shaping on the Pottery Wheel – Create with Your Own Hands
Now the real fun begins. With your clay prepared and air bubbles removed, you’ll learn how to center it on a pottery wheel and shape it into a small object—perhaps a teacup, bowl, or decorative vessel. Your instructor will guide your hands as you mold the spinning clay, gently adjusting pressure and movement to refine the shape. It’s a deeply satisfying and meditative process, allowing you to focus on rhythm, balance, and the touch of the clay. Even beginners are often surprised at how quickly they can produce a meaningful result.
Step 3: Glazing, Kiln Firing & Finishing – Transform with Fire
Once your piece is shaped, it’s time for the drying and glazing phase. You’ll be shown how to apply glaze evenly, choosing from traditional or modern color palettes to personalize your pottery. Glazing not only enhances the beauty of the item, but also seals and protects it before firing. The final stage is kiln firing at extremely high temperatures—a magical transformation that solidifies the form and reveals its final finish.
Because the firing, cooling, and quality-checking process takes time, your completed ceramic artwork will be ready in approximately one month. The studio offers shipping services (domestic and international), so your personalized souvenir can be safely sent to your home once it’s complete.
After the tour ends, drive you back to your hotel or suzhou train station.
