Upon your arrival in Shanghai, our driver will be waiting for you at the airport arrival hall, holding a sign with “Your Way Holiday” for easy recognition. After meeting you, he will assist with your luggage and take you directly to your hotel in a comfortable private vehicle. As China’s most vibrant and cosmopolitan city, Shanghai offers a fascinating blend of East and West, with its modern skyline, historic landmarks, and lively waterfront along the Bund. Get ready to explore a city where tradition meets innovation at every corner.
In the morning, your guide will meet you in the hotel lobby, holding a “Your Way Holiday” welcome sign for easy recognition. From there, set off on a memorable day exploring the highlights of Shanghai — a city where historic charm meets modern innovation, offering a unique blend of culture, architecture, and local life.
Start your day by stepping into the historic charm of Shanghai’s Old Town, where you’ll explore the beautifully preserved Yuyuan Garden. Built during the Ming Dynasty, this classical garden offers a peaceful escape from the bustling city. Wander along winding paths, past elegant pavilions, curved bridges, and serene lotus ponds. The garden’s intricate design reflects the artistry and symbolism of ancient Chinese culture. With insightful commentary from your guide, you’ll gain a fresh appreciation for the philosophies and craftsmanship behind this timeless landscape. Your guide will help you uncover the symbolism in the garden’s architecture and layout, explain the cultural significance of its features, and share fascinating stories about its history, making your visit both engaging and educational.
Next, you’ll visit The Bund, Shanghai’s iconic riverside promenade where the past and present come together in a spectacular display. Along the Huangpu River, admire a striking collection of colonial-era buildings showcasing styles from Gothic to Baroque, standing proudly beside Shanghai’s ultra-modern skyscrapers like the Oriental Pearl Tower and Shanghai Tower. This vibrant waterfront perfectly captures the city’s unique blend of Western influence and Chinese innovation. As you stroll here, your guide will bring to life the fascinating history of Shanghai’s rise—from a quiet fishing town to one of the world’s most dynamic urban centers.
Next, we will head to Tianzifang, the creative heart of Shanghai. This lively maze of narrow alleys is filled with quirky boutiques, contemporary art galleries, and cozy cafés. Once a typical residential neighborhood, this area has been reinvented as a vibrant cultural hotspot that blends modern creativity with old-world architecture. As you stroll through the charming streets, take in the colorful murals, discover handcrafted treasures, and soak up the unique atmosphere that reflects Shanghai’s thriving arts scene.
For lunch, enjoy a delicious meal at a local Shanghai restaurant known for its authentic flavors and elegant atmosphere. Savor a variety of regional specialties such as xiao long bao (soup dumplings), red-braised pork, and shredded tofu in broth, along with freshly prepared seasonal vegetables and steamed rice. The meal offers a perfect opportunity to experience the rich culinary heritage of Shanghai, blending sweet and savory tastes with refined presentation.
Continue your journey with a visit to the Old French Concession, one of Shanghai’s most atmospheric neighborhoods. Stroll along leafy boulevards lined with elegant villas, quaint lane houses, and chic boutiques, where the blend of European flair and local culture creates a unique urban landscape. Once home to diplomats, writers, and revolutionaries, this former foreign settlement offers a glimpse into Shanghai’s colonial past. As you explore, your guide will point out architectural details and lesser-known corners, unveiling the stories that make this area a living museum of the city’s multicultural heritage.
Wrap up your day with a walk along Nanjing Road, Shanghai’s legendary shopping boulevard that stretches from the Bund to People’s Square. Lined with an exciting blend of modern malls, traditional specialty shops, and street vendors, it’s the perfect place to browse for everything from designer labels to local souvenirs. As evening falls, the street comes alive with glowing lights and bustling crowds, offering a vibrant glimpse into the city’s energetic pace and contemporary lifestyle.
After the tour, your guide will accompany you back to your hotel, ensuring you return comfortably and safely. Feel free to ask for any recommendations or tips for your evening in Shanghai along the way.
In the morning, your Shanghai driver will meet you in the hotel lobby and transfer you to the high-speed train station. You will take the high-speed train to Suzhou on your own. Upon arrival, your Suzhou guide will be waiting for you at the station exit, holding a “Your Way Holiday” sign for easy recognition.
First, we will head to Canglang Pavilion (Surging Wave Pavilion), the oldest existing classical garden in Suzhou, dating back to the Northern Song Dynasty. Unlike more ornate gardens, Canglang Pavilion is known for its simple elegance and strong connection to nature. Surrounded by ancient trees, rockeries, and a peaceful pond, the garden creates a tranquil atmosphere that reflects traditional Chinese ideals of harmony between people and the natural world. Your guide will highlight the garden’s literary heritage and explain how its design embodies the philosophy of restraint, balance, and poetic beauty.
Next, we will visit Tiger Hill, one of Suzhou’s most celebrated historical landmarks, renowned for its natural beauty and deep cultural significance. Often described as “the No.1 scenic spot in Suzhou,” Tiger Hill is home to the iconic Leaning Pagoda, also known as the Yunyan Pagoda, which has stood for over a thousand years and leans more than the Tower of Pisa. The hill is steeped in legend, including tales of ancient kings and hidden swords beneath its grounds. As you explore its winding paths, bonsai gardens, and centuries-old stone carvings, your guide will share the fascinating stories that have made Tiger Hill a beloved destination for poets, scholars, and travelers throughout Chinese history.
For lunch, enjoy a delightful meal at a local Suzhou restaurant, where you can savor the light, delicate flavors of Suzhou cuisine, known for its subtle sweetness and refined presentation. Signature dishes may include squirrel-shaped mandarin fish with sweet and sour sauce, steamed pork with glutinous rice, and seasonal vegetables prepared with traditional techniques. Set in a charming Jiangnan-style setting, the restaurant offers not only authentic flavors but also a serene dining atmosphere that complements the cultural elegance of Suzhou.
Our next stop is Hanshan Temple, a serene and historic Buddhist temple that has stood on the banks of the Grand Canal for over 1,400 years. Famous throughout China thanks to the Tang Dynasty poem “A Night Mooring by Maple Bridge” by Zhang Ji, the temple evokes a deep sense of cultural nostalgia. As you wander through its peaceful courtyards, ancient bell tower, and traditional halls, you’ll hear the echoes of history in the quiet chimes and elegant architecture. Your guide will share the temple’s literary connections and explain the significance of its famous midnight bell, which draws visitors every New Year's Eve seeking blessings for the year ahead.
Finally, we will head to Pingjiang Road, one of Suzhou’s most charming and well-preserved ancient streets. Lined with traditional white-walled houses, quaint teahouses, and artisan shops, this historic canal-side lane offers a glimpse into Suzhou’s rich cultural heritage. As you wander along the cobblestone path beside the gently flowing waterways, your guide will introduce you to the local history, architecture, and customs that make Pingjiang Road a beloved destination for both locals and visitors alike. Don’t forget to pause and enjoy some traditional snacks or pick up unique handmade souvenirs along the way.
After the tour, the guide and driver will escort you back to your hotel in Suzhou.
Today’s adventure takes us to Tongli Water Town, one of the most picturesque and well-preserved ancient towns in the Yangtze River Delta. Renowned for its peaceful canals, timeless stone bridges, and traditional architecture, Tongli perfectly embodies the classic water town charm of southern China. Covering an area of approximately 51 square miles (133 square kilometers), Tongli consists of seven islands separated by 15 waterways, connected by 49 historic bridges. Among these, the Taiping (Peace), Jili (Good Fortune), and Changqing (Celebration) bridges stand out as culturally significant landmarks. These bridges not only link different parts of the town but also represent the enduring heritage and scenic beauty of Tongli, making it a truly unforgettable destination.
Our exploration begins at Retreat Garden (Tui Si Yuan), a stunning example of classical Suzhou garden artistry. This serene garden showcases a harmonious blend of natural scenery and human craftsmanship, featuring tranquil ponds, elegant pavilions, and lush greenery. As you stroll through this peaceful setting, your guide will share insights into the garden’s historical background and the traditional Chinese philosophies that inspired its design. You’ll also learn about the notable visitors who once admired its beauty, enriching your appreciation of this cultural treasure.
Next, we visit Chongben Hall (Chong Ben Tang), a magnificent traditional Suzhou residence known for its intricate wood carvings and refined architectural details. This historic mansion offers a glimpse into the luxurious lifestyle of Suzhou’s elite during the Ming and Qing dynasties. As you explore the hall, your guide will highlight the exquisite craftsmanship and explain the historical significance of the building and its former inhabitants, bringing to life the stories behind this elegant structure.
Our journey continues to the Pearl Tower (Zhen Zhu Ta), a landmark that stands gracefully within Tongli’s skyline. This ancient tower is admired not only for its unique architectural style but also for its rich cultural symbolism. Your guide will provide fascinating details about the tower’s construction, its role in local history, and the legends associated with it. You’ll gain a deeper understanding of why the Pearl Tower remains a cherished icon in the region.
For lunch, we will stop at a local restaurant to enjoy authentic Suzhou cuisine, celebrated for its delicate balance of sweet and savory flavors. Highlights may include the famed Sweet and Sour Mandarin Fish, tender Braised Pork Belly, and specialties like Silk-wrapped Dumplings or Crabmeat Noodles. This meal offers a wonderful opportunity to taste the distinctive flavors of the Jiangnan region in a warm and inviting setting.
After lunch, we’ll visit the Three Bridges (San Qiao), a scenic cluster of ancient stone bridges in nearby Zhouzhuang. Each bridge features its own unique design and story, playing an important role in the town’s history and daily life. Your guide will share intriguing legends and explain the cultural significance of these bridges, giving you a chance to connect with the heritage and picturesque charm of this famous water town.
Finally, we conclude the day at Jiayin Hall (Jia Yin Tang), a beautifully preserved residence that reflects the elegance and craftsmanship of traditional Suzhou architecture. Explore the detailed woodwork and graceful layout as your guide recounts the lifestyle and customs of the family who once lived here. This visit provides a rich cultural insight into Tongli’s architectural and social history.
At the end of the tour, we will arrange your comfortable transfer back to the high-speed rail station, wrapping up a memorable half-day discovery of Tongli’s cultural gems. You will take a high-speed train to Hangzhou, where a driver holding a sign with “Your Way Holiday” will be waiting for you at the exit of the train station.
Your journey in Hangzhou begins with a peaceful boat ride on the iconic West Lake, a place celebrated for its natural charm and poetic appeal. As you glide across the calm waters, you'll be surrounded by panoramic views of willow-lined banks, distant pagodas, and misty hills. Your guide will point out notable landmarks such as the Broken Bridge, Leifeng Pagoda, and the Three Pools Mirroring the Moon, each with its own tale rooted in local legend and tradition. One of the most famous stories is that of the White Snake, a romantic folk tale intricately linked with the lake. The scenic cruise not only offers a tranquil start to your day but also introduces you to the cultural depth that makes West Lake a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Next, enjoy a leisurely walk through the Viewing Fish at Flower Pond, a beloved garden nestled beside West Lake. Here, crystal-clear ponds teeming with vibrant koi fish are set against a backdrop of seasonal blossoms and traditional garden design. Your guide will explain how the koi fish symbolize strength and prosperity, while the lotus flowers represent purity and spiritual growth. This serene setting provides a quiet space for contemplation and an excellent opportunity for photography. As you meander through the garden paths, you'll discover how Chinese gardens integrate natural beauty with deep symbolic meaning.
Your exploration continues at Lingyin Temple, one of China’s oldest and most revered Buddhist temples. Tucked between forested hills, this sacred site offers a serene escape from the modern world. Upon arrival, you'll be introduced to the temple's ancient history, its role in Chinese Buddhism, and the artistic significance of its architecture. Highlights include the towering Hall of the Heavenly Kings and the Grand Hall housing an impressive statue of the Sakyamuni Buddha. Don't miss the nearby Feilai Peak, where hundreds of stone carvings of Buddhist figures are etched into the cliffs, some dating back more than a thousand years. These remarkable works of art offer insight into the spiritual devotion and artistic legacy of past dynasties.
For lunch, savor two signature dishes that define Hangzhou cuisine. First is the delicate Dingsheng Cake, a sweet treat made from glutinous rice flour and typically enjoyed during celebratory moments. The second is the iconic Dongpo Pork, named after the famous Song Dynasty poet Su Dongpo. This slow-braised pork belly dish, cooked in a mixture of soy sauce, rice wine, and sugar, boasts a rich flavor and velvety texture that melts in your mouth. Paired with steamed buns or rice, it's a satisfying taste of local culinary tradition.
In the afternoon, visit the Meijiawu Tea Plantation, located in the lush hills that surround West Lake. This area is renowned for producing Longjing (Dragon Well) Tea, one of China’s most esteemed green teas. Your guide will walk you through the terraced tea fields and explain the process of cultivating and handcrafting Longjing Tea. From the plucking of the tender leaves to the unique hand-pan-frying method, each step is a testament to centuries-old tradition. You’ll also have the chance to participate in a tea tasting session, where you can savor the delicate aroma and taste of freshly brewed tea while learning about its health benefits and its role in Chinese social culture.
Later, you’ll stroll through Hefang Street, one of Hangzhou’s oldest commercial hubs. This pedestrian-only street is brimming with life, featuring restored buildings, traditional shopfronts, and artisans showcasing time-honored crafts. Your guide will share stories of the street’s historical importance and introduce you to local delicacies such as osmanthus cakes and traditional Hangzhou snacks. It's also a great place to shop for souvenirs like silk scarves, tea sets, or hand-crafted fans. The vibrant mix of culture, cuisine, and history makes Hefang Street a must-visit for those seeking a deeper connection with Hangzhou’s past and present.
As evening falls, prepare to be enchanted by the Impression West Lake Show, an immersive outdoor performance staged on the waters of West Lake itself. Directed by famed Chinese filmmaker Zhang Yimou, the show uses music, lighting, dance, and storytelling to dramatize ancient myths and romantic tales associated with the lake. With the moonlight shimmering on the water and the natural surroundings as the stage, the performance offers a magical conclusion to your day. Your guide will provide background information to help you appreciate the stories and symbolism depicted in the show.
After the performance, your guide and driver will accompany you back to your hotel, ensuring a smooth and comfortable end to your Hangzhou adventure. Use the evening to relax and reflect on the day’s rich blend of scenic beauty, cultural heritage, and culinary delight.
In the morning, your driver will accompany you to the train station or airport for your Hangzhou departure, marking the end of your unforgettable 6-day China exploration tour. They will ensure a smooth transfer, assist with your luggage, and help with check-in procedures, allowing you to focus on reflecting on the incredible experiences and memories made throughout your journey. I took the Essence of Suzhou tour through Suzhou Private Tours. My guides name was Becky and she was extremely friendly and knowledgeable. The company (Suzhou Private Tours) was very prompt with communication and even personalized the tour to fit my needs. I highly recommend this tour company and Becky the tour guide. I would also like to note that as a tall, person of color I was a bit of a novelty and many onlookers waned to take pictures or ask questions. Becky was very professional and protective of me and always controlled the situation. I really appreciated her.
