First, you’ll be driven to Panmen Gate (also known as Pan Gate), a renowned historical landmark located in the southwest of Suzhou. Originally built in 514 BC during the Spring and Autumn Period (770–476 BC), when Suzhou served as the capital of the Wu Kingdom, it was one of eight city gates that formed part of the city’s defensive walls. Panmen Gate was the only entrance to ancient Suzhou and is especially notable for its unique combination of both land and water gates—an architectural rarity in China. The current structure was reconstructed in 1351 and features the Land Gate, the Water Gate, the Wumen Bridge, and the Auspicious Light Pagoda. These three sites together are often referred to as the “Three Scenes at Panmen Gate.” The Auspicious Light Pagoda is the oldest Buddhist pagoda in the region, and from its top, you can enjoy panoramic views of the scenic Yangtze River Delta. Continue your tour with a visit to the Suzhou Confucian Temple, also known as the Suzhou Stone Inscription Museum and formerly the Suzhou Prefecture School. Located in the heart of the city, the temple was originally built under the order of Fan Zhongyan, the Prefect of Suzhou during the Northern Song Dynasty. It is situated just across the street from the famous Garden of the Surging Wave Pavilion. The temple complex not only served as a place of learning but also featured traditional garden elements such as rockeries, ponds, bridges, and pavilions, showcasing classic Jiangnan garden aesthetics. Among similar institutions in southeastern China, it was the largest in scale. Your knowledgeable guide will walk you through the temple grounds, sharing insights into Confucian education and the site's historical significance.

The final stop of your tour is Canglang Pavilion, also known as the Great Wave Pavilion, Surging Wave Pavilion, or Blue Wave Pavilion. As one of the Classical Gardens of Suzhou recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, it holds the distinction of being the oldest surviving classical garden in the city. Canglang Pavilion is also one of Suzhou’s four most celebrated gardens, alongside the Lion Grove Garden (Shizilin), the Humble Administrator's Garden (Zhuozhengyuan), and the Lingering Garden (Liuyuan). Located in the southwest part of the city, just west of the Confucian Temple, the garden features natural rock formations, tranquil waters, and elegant pavilions. Though it has undergone various renovations over the centuries, its original layout and essence remain well preserved.
