Suzhou listed as a pilot city in protection and utilization of historical buildings

Suzhou has been listed as one of the first batch of 10 pilot cities on the protection and utilization of historical buildings in China by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-rural Development.

The other nine cities are: Beijing, Guangzhou, Yangzhou, Yantai, Hangzhou, Ningbo, Fuzhou, Xiamen and Huangshan.

The pilot cities should finish the works of general survey, confirmation, setting up of archive and keep as much historical buildings as possible so as to lay the foundation for future protection and utilization.

Some historical buildings can be used to set up innovative space, cafes, restaurants and hotels to explore the reasonable and sustainable way of utilization, according to the Ministry of Housing and Urban-rural Development.

The protection and utilization of historical buildings should be based on a set of techniques, standards and methods, which should be different from cultural relic architectures.

Suzhou has set up a leading group on the protection and utilization of its historical buildings, which will be responsible for the scientific protection and utilization of such buildings.
